you know the school holidays are here and it has really given me a chance to take a short break from things.
i've had the privilege today to watch some old soccer clips, as well as some newer ones. and i was just pondering about which is the greatest miracle comeback ever in soccer history. i mean, there was the most famous Liverpool triumph over AC Milan in 2005, where Liverpool fought from 3-0 down to win the Champions League on penalties. and of course there was a slightly older clip from 1999, where Manchester United scored two late goals within the last 3 minutes of extra time to clinch to same trophy. interestingly, the last one was also for the same trophy, where one day ago, Man Utd fought against a barrage of Chelsea shots, as well as a missed penalty, to emerge as Champions of Europe once again.
now i admit that Chelsea was the superior team in the Champions League match yesterday. kudos to them for putting up such a fight.
but back to the topic. i was wondering which was the best comeback ever. and undoubtedly, i have to say that it was the 1999 Treble winning year for Man Utd. i mean, i watched the video. they were already tying the "Bayern Munich" ribbon on the Champions League trophy. Bobby Charlton was leaving Nou Camp dejectedly.
then Ryan Giggs did it. a magnificent pass to Sheringham, and Man Utd were back in the game. and just minutes later, a Beckham corner was headed by Sheringham into the path of Solksjaer, where the slightest of taps did it for Man Utd.
3 minutes, 2 goals, 1 historic win.
Munich players broke down in tears in 1999. so did the Milan players in 2005. and now John Terry cried for almost the whole night after Man Utd win in 2008.
and whoever said soccer wasn't interesting?
