i find totalitarians very interesting. you see, totalitarians all share this same pattern. we look at Adolf Hitler, Valdimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin; the more well known dictators of modern history, we see the same pattern arising.
First there is the struggle for power. Hitler of course was locked up in jail for a few months because of his failed putsch over the German government. then we know he wrote Mein Kampf, got out of jail, ran for elections with his Nazi party, won a minority, blah blah blah. of course, Lenin was more of against the Russian Provisional Government after the Tsar Nicholas II was overthrown. and well, Stalin got off easy.
Second is the tactics they used. all the time we see the same tactics. be it Hitler in Germany, Stalin and Lenin in Russia, they kill their opposition. we know Hitler started the Reichstag Fire and blamed it on the Communists. though there is no evidence against him, most historians think so. but then again, the Commies got it coming. of course Lenin was communist. but anyway. and both in Germany and Russia, they targeted religions. this is for the very fact that religion can be a means to unite the people and oppose the oppression they face. in fact, Mary Somers summed it up pretty well. religion is a means to shore up self-worth in the face of intruding Westernisation. except this time, strike out Westernisation and insert oppression. so they target religion, especially Christianity. we know Hitler went against the Jews (who weren't really Christians but i'll categorise them under this), and Lenin tried to abolish religion for the very fact that religion could be a political party which would oppose the power he had established in his state.
oh well. i like history. and if i do study history, i'll take a course on totalitarianism. totalitarians are damn interesting. and the fun part is, most of them die. wheee.
oh well. i have to go mug biology.
